Imago
Theory
"Imago
theory offers a new definition of couplehood, based
on collaboration, understanding, equality and safety"
Harville Hendrix & Helen LaKelly Hunt
Imago
theory is based on the work of Harville Hendrix, PH.D
and Helen LaKelly Hunt, PH.D, and was first published
in the best seller 'Getting the love you want: A Guide
for Couples" by Harville Hendrix, which has sold over
2 million copies around the world and translated in
50 languages. Imago theory is based on the relational
paradigm, which embraces the two separate and uniques
individuals while honouring the connection of the
raltionship.
The
Imago Dialogue
In
Imago, effective communication is considered crucial
to unlocking deeper connections. The Imago Dialogue
is an intentional, structured communication technique,
which is the foundational skill in Imago Relationship
Therapy. Through the three-step process of the Imago
Dialogue, couples learn how to communicate effectively,
create safety for each partner, remove defensive responses,
develop empathy, deepen their connection, and transform
their relationship.

Contexts
Although
Imago Relationship Therapy evolved as a theory and

gay/lesbian relationships, friendships, and business
relationships. Imago processes can be applied between
two people or in group contexts.
